In 1992 I could have done with someone’s help. A coach? A therapist? A friend? My life was a mess.

Within a short period of time I’d gone from being one of Australia’s popular Pentecostal preachers, a respected leader in the denomination, married with two beautiful daughters, to being publicly humiliated, losing everything I’d spent years building and living in a dysfunctional, abusive co-dependant relationship with the man I’d fallen in love with. Over 60% of my clients come for coaching in midlife – some are in crisis and for others it’s a significant time of transition. Others are not really conscious of what is happening, they just know things are not right in their world.

Depending on a number of factors, midlife can be anywhere from the 30’s to 50’s. Mostly though it is closer to the 40 mark. It was like clockwork for me. Things began to unravel two months before my 40^th birthday. Our response to this stage in life determines success in our future.

Your personal value and belief system is quite complex and has been formed very early in life through the culture/society we come from as well as one’s family and historical environment. People sometimes say my values have changed but this is not true. It just might seem at times as if some are more important than others because of changes in life’s circumstances.

This internal value system influences our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Your values are your guiding lights and drivers. You use your value system to measure or judge your level of success, fulfillment and happiness.

Your value and belief system is totally unique. I call it your subconscious thumbprint.

I was single for the first time in decades. I had no close friends with whom to talk. My career was at a standstill. My finances were precarious. I was overweight and out of shape. Not to put too fine a point on it, I was in a bad place. And I found it difficult to imagine how I could get to a better one. I was at a critical point.

An expectation is a strong belief that something will come your way. It’s very different to just wishing or hoping.

How important are our expectations in determining what happens to us in life?

Albert Einstein said. ‘Your imagination is the preview of the coming events in your life.’

It doesn’t take a great deal of observation to notice that people who expect the best in life usually seem to happier and life runs smoother.  And have you noticed that the reverse also seems to be true? Those who expect the worst seem to get it.

Yes it’s simple – you CAN make 2018 great

1. Write down your goals and what you want to achieve in 2018.

Have you done it yet? It’s an annual ritual for me. Of course it’s important to think about what you want to achieve but even more important that you write them down. The actual act of writing them down has an impact on your subconscious. You have a record in your mind and also on paper. It is no longer just a fleeting, passing thought. Put these up somewhere as a reminder during the year and you can refer back to at the beginning of 2019. Health, finance, relationship, travel, learning, career, things you want to change in yourself. Think broadly about different areas of your life. Read more →

So much of the life I’d built was incongruous with who I really was. Eight months ago I started on one of the most significant journeys of my life. I decided after 41 years to accept my sexuality and live an authentic life.

The first book I read, that a friend kindly gave me, was “A Life of Unlearning” by Anthony Venn-Brown. Once I began reading I could not put it down. This book touched me in a profound way. I related with Anthony’s story in so many ways. I was particular inspired by Anthony’s honesty and openness in the way that he bared his soul on the pages in front of me. ‘After some initial self-doubts, I completed the ‘Dare to be Your Best’ program, and couldn’t be happier.

As the program unfolded, my coach and me started to challenge and overcome many preconceptions I  had about my capacity to actually deliver on some of the objectives of the program.  I surprised myself by clearly determining and articulating goals, values, and beliefs, and I found the 1, 5, and 10 year letter-writing exercise to be very useful also.  I was also surprised by how much was in my sub-conscious, and that if I thought and spoke about it, I really did have a lot of the answers – I just didn’t realise it.
