The latent power of imagination
All the breaks you need in life wait within your imagination; Imagination is the workshop of your mind, capable of turning mind energy into accomplishment and wealth. Napoleon Hill
As children we used our imagination without any judgement but as we grow up we are quickly conditioned to be “realistic”. Stop day dreaming we are told. This means we cease using or limit the most powerful and creative faculty of the mind. Every invention ever created was first created in the imagination. Successful people succeeded by using their imagination. They imagined it first. It just didn’t happen.
Your imagination is your preview of life’s coming attractions. Albert Einstein
You are always using your imagination. Some people habitually imagine the worst, problems in relationships, difficulties at work, financial struggle etc. and attract what they have thought of……even if they try and resist it. The mind cannot distinguish the difference between an imagined experience and a real one. It, therefore, responds to what you imagine. It becomes a “Mental Blueprint,” if you will.
For imagination sets the goal “picture” which our automatic mechanism works on. We act, or fail to act, not because of “will,” as is so commonly believed, but because of imagination. Maxwell Maltz
One of the things I love doing as a coach is assisting my clients release the power of their imagination. New thoughts, possibilities and ideas begin to evolve. The results are often dramatic as new events, people and circumstances begin appearing in their lives. Almost like magic. As a muscle becomes stronger with use, so does your imagination. Use it.
Let your imagination release your imprisoned possibilities. Robert H. Schuller
The Research
A popular visualization for athletes is the mental rehearsal of sporting events while ‘intending’ a desired outcome. Amazingly, research has revealed that visualization can actually enhance performance to nearly the same extent as physical practice. A study conducted by Dr. Blaslotto at the University Of Chicago is an intriguing example.
The goal of Dr. Blaslotto‘s study was to determine the effects of visualization on sports performance. As a performance measure for this experiment, the researchers chose the free throw percentage of a group of basketball players. First, to establish a basis for the study, the current free-throw success rate of each of the subjects was tested and recorded. Three groups were then established, and the athletes were assigned to one of the groups at random. After 30 days of testing and retesting, the results were as follows:
The Results
The third group, who neither physically practiced or visualized shooting free-throws, showed no increase in percentage.
The first group which physically shot free-throws for an hour daily, collectively improved their free-throw shooting by 24%.
The second group, which practiced daily by visualizing shooting and making free-throws, collectively improved their free-throw shooting by a 23% without having physically shot a basketball!
How this Worked for Me
I still have the tools I used to become an award winning author. I created a dream board with an affirmation on it and a mock up of the cover ‘A Life of Unlearning’. When I said my affirmation “I am a successful author” I imagined myself at my book launch. I felt the wonderful emotions of achievement, of having my autobiography published and receiving awards. When I’d enter a bookshop I’d imagine a display of my book. Basically I lived the experience over and over in my imagination.
I began doing that in 1999 when I had never written a book, had an agent or publisher. The rest is history.

How this Works for You
This is already working in your life. You are already creating. The question is, WHAT are you imagining/visualising will happen in your life? Are you imagining missing hoops or having them fall in effortlessly? If you are not happy with the results it might help to be more conscious of what’s playing on the screen of your mind. If the movie is wrong then change it. Rehearse your success constantly in your mind.
If you are considering the possibility of being coached, I offer a no obligation, complimentary, one hour consultation.

Hi Anthony! Great quotes and advice. I’m glad that the Albert Einstein quote I posted the other day inspired you as well! I also appreciate how you outline and break down the research and results. Very clever and helpful!
Thanks Jacqueline for your encouragement. I’m glad you fond that helpful. I missed your post. Did you put it on Facebook. You will have to send me the link and I’ll comment. Thanks.
