Stale, lacking direction and in a rut. Now clear, focused and on purpose.
I’d worked in the biotechnology / pharmaceutical industry for a number of years. While my career had been interesting up to that point, it had started getting stale and humdrum; I was in a bit of a rut, I lacked direction, and I needed to break out of cruise control. So I thought I’d explore coaching with Anthony Venn-Brown by booking a complimentary session. Anthony and the Dare to be Your Best program ticked all the boxes.
Together we worked on my life from a number of angles. My big light bulb moment was the values exercise: what were my most important values? What was really important to me? And importantly – who was I??? I was floored by the level of clarity, self awareness and direction this exercise gave me.
There was a seismic shift in my life.
I had a focus, at last. I decided to get some financial literacy – I planned to be responsible for budgets, after all – and took on an MBA. Now I was driven; not in a negative way, but now my life had purpose. After the MBA I decided to undertake a PhD in international business management, which is a long way from where I started.
Not only did things change in my career, I started doing things I would not have dreamed of doing a few years before; I joined Toastmasters to practice my public speaking skills, and a year after I became president of our club, Mentoring and encouraging new and existing members.
Importantly, I stopped chasing dead ends, saying “no” to situations and jobs that before I would have said “yes” to, because they were not taking me in the direction I was heading. I was now proactively setting my life’s direction.
The story’s not over yet. New avenues in my career are opening up, and I don’t know where this will end. In addition, I now have an online community of people who “get” me, who support me in my new endeavours.
Thank you, Anthony, for the new direction and focus.
