Breaking through your limited thinking
Much of what I do as a coach is help people see things differently and change limited thinking and mindsets. Expanding their thinking to think bigger, brighter and about new possibilities, opportunities, options. This creative level of thinking results in significant changes in their career, relationships and performance as people’s thinking about themselves is stretched. Research has shown that the results people get in their lives are produced by their thinking. In other words what you think you are you are. If you can’t see it you’ll never be it.
Your capacity to achieve is limited by your mindset. A goldfish’s growth is limited to the size of the bowl it’s living in. Your mind is like the bowl. Your personal growth and what you can achieve is restricted by what you believe about yourself. We are the ones who put limits on ourselves. If you think that you are average or below average then that is all you will ever be. If you believe however in yourself and the capacity to achieve more then you reap the rewards of greater and greater success.
Roger Bannister broke through limited thinking
Up until 1954 no one believed it was possible for a human being to run the mile in under 4 minutes. The body produced too much wind resistance some said. Others spoke of the limits of the human body. Some even said that if attempted the human body would collapse. But on the 6th May 1954 Roger Bannister broke through a previously held belief and ran the mile in 3 minutes 59.4 seconds (see video here). The following month Australian John Landy bettered broke Bannister’s record with a time of 3 minutes 57.9 seconds and other followed. The current world record is 3 minutes:43.13 seconds. That’s over 15 seconds less than Bannister’s record. What was perceived as a 4 minute barrier, once broken, became easier for others to break through once the belief was changed.
So I guess the question to ask yourself is do you have a four-minute barrier in your mind about what you can achieve that needs to be broken through?
You are an amazing physical creature
You have 15 billion brain cells that together are twinkling with the circuitry of a 1,000 cities. Your ears can hear 1,600 different frequencies, ranging from 20 to 20,000 cycles per second. Your eyes can detect a single photon of light and the 800,000 fibres in each of your optic nerves transmit more information from the 132 million rods and cones to your brain than the worlds largest computer system. The more than 300 million air sacs in your lungs provide oxygen to 100 trillion cells throughout your body. Your 206 bones and 656 muscles form a more functionally diverse system of capabilities than any known creature. And these and other tremendous abilities to function and learn can be applied in countless ways. You can’t count all your capabilities – there are tooooooo many. YOU ARE AMAZING! Believe it.
Do you have a life purpose…a destiny?
Fifty trillion cells make up the human body. Each of those cells, in turn, consists of atoms-countless millions or billions of them-depending on the function of the specific cell. Atoms consist mostly of empty space-protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons. Empty space, just as the universe is mostly empty space.
The human body, this entity of mostly empty space, is space held together even if for only a little while, by a life force. Life force needs a purpose. Without a purpose there is no reason for the unity. Without a purpose, life deteriorates, tends to dissolve back into randomness. Without a purpose, a life is less than the sum of its parts.
The atoms existed before the human body they make up existed, and will be here after the life has gone. In the meantime, in the short interval, the atoms are held together by the indescribable, unknowable force-the empty space.
That unknowable force has a purpose, has a path, has a destiny. It may be a destiny denied, but there is a reason for the unity. A life force exists on borrowed energy, captured for a brief while, from the surrounding world.
For those atoms to come together at random, without purpose, and then dissipate into emptiness is, I think, life without meaning. Destiny denied.
